Blood of the Hellenes

I receive my strength from the bloodsoaked soil of my forbears;
dust at my feet filled with memories of struggle and losses,
of perseverance and triumph.

I receive my strength from the cries of memory;
carried along by the Anemoi, calls to freedom,
cries of hurt and mourning; cries carried along the aeons to remind me, that nothing shall break me, change me or take my freedom.
My shield lies broken; my sword has lost its sheen,
my arms are weary of parry and thrust.

But in my eyes lies glowing the spark of my soul’s fire ready to be kindled
and to arise as a phoenix from the ashes of pain,
waiting for the winds to fan me alight and, to the screeching sound of the Furies, to liberate me from taunting words of derision

I am the hymn of freedom: Honour is my name and Humility my liege; the souls of my forbears precede me,
all-healing in their paean,
for nothing can break or change me, and nothing shall take my freedom.
